GREAT FALLS, Mont. - It had to feel a little bit like déjà vu for the Benedictine University Mesa women's volleyball team on Saturday.
Fall in their first match of the day, put it together in their second match and come out with a victory. Just like Friday.
The Redhawks came out with a huge split on Day 2 of the University of Providence (Mont.) Tournament on Saturday afternoon, collecting a comeback win over the host Argos, who were receiving votes in the latest NAIA poll, 3-2 (31-33, 19-25, 25-19, 26-24, 15-12), after falling in their first match against Carroll College, 3-0 (14-25, 22-25, 12-25).
The final match of the tournament was a grinder. The two teams locked horns right away in the first set, as the Redhawks came back from a 24-19 deficit on Hayden Boucher's serve to force things into extra points. Ultimately, the hosts took the first set and used that momentum to take set two and hold a 2-0 match lead.
That's when the Redhawks kicked things into gear, turning the tables in set three with a 25-19 win, finishing it off with a huge kill from Sydney Nelson and grinding out a set four victory to push things to a deciding fifth set.
The final set didn't start out as BenU Mesa had hoped, as they trailed 6-2 early. But the Redhawks found their footing and pushed back, eventually going a five-point run on Olivia Ortiz's serve to take a 14-11 lead. Two points later, Nelson put the exclamation point on the comeback with a kill to give them the win.
Savannah Ekis led the offense in the win with 17 kills, while Lauren Purdy and Nelson also hit double digits on the attack, finishing with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Ortiz racked up 46 assists and 18 digs, while Caitlan Sammons led the defense with 21 digs.
Just like Friday, the second-match win came after a tough defeat at the hands of Carroll College in the first match of the day. The Redhawks couldn't muster much of a fight in the three-set loss, only coming close in the second set of the match.
Ekis led the offense in that match, as well, finishing with seven kills in the loss.
The Redhawks head back home for their next match, taking on Phoenix-area rival Arizona Christian on Tuesday at Heap Gymnasium. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
