It was looking good for the Benedictine University Mesa men's soccer team on Thursday night in their inaugural game as a program.
All it took, though, was 10 minutes to have it come crashing down.
The Redhawks were felled by a late Arizona Christian University Firestorm goal in regulation and another in overtime, as they lost 3-2 in their home, season and program opener on Thursday night at Riverview Park.
BenU Mesa looked to have things under control for most of the second half after two goals in the first frame -- one by Gerves Fagan in the 23rd minute and another by Daniel Arellano off a free kick in the 38th minutes -- gave them a 2-1 lead.
However, the momentum changed on a red card that was given to the Redhawks in the 78th minute, leaving them a man short for the remaining 12.
In that twelve minutes, the Firestorm continued to press and finally came through with the tying tally in the 87th on a cross that snuck past keeper Luke Boudreau to make it 2-2.
The man down would hurt BenU in the extra time, as Arizona Christian ended it eight minutes into overtime.
BenU Mesa is back in action next weekend when they travel to San Diego to take on San Diego Christian and St. Katherine's.
