The Benedictine University Mesa women's soccer team was ever so close to making their inaugural game one to remember.
They just couldn't find the back of the net when they needed to.
The Redhawks made a big push for a comeback in the second half but couldn't find the goal to tie it, falling to the Arizona Christian University Firestorm, 2-1, on Thursday at Riverview Park for their home, season and program opener.
ACU held the upper hand early in the match, pouring in two goals in the first frame to take a 2-0 lead to the break. But BenU was game for the challenege, coming out in the second half and taking it to the Firestorm.
They would close the gap in the 61st minute when Carlie Watson connected with Jackie Igulu on a beautiful through ball that Igulu ripped past the Firestorm keeper to record the first goal in BenU women's soccer history and cut the lead to 2-1.
13 minutes later, it appeared as the the Redhawks were gonna tie the game after Watson was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick. But her shot glanced off the crossbar and BenU wouldn't get another look like that the rest of the match.
Both teams played a fairly even match, as ACU just outshot BenU, 12-10.
The Redhawks are back in action next weekend on the road, when they travel to San Diego Christian and St. Katherine's for two non-conference contests.
